Michael Jackson and the Blue City

Michael Jackson has been staying in Oman. Officially at the Grand Hyatt Hotel, according to a brief report in the Times of Oman, although rumours on Oman Forum suggest that he transferred to the Al Bustan Hotel where his children could have more room, and that he was due to leave the country today.

Lili Kumari and the Honorary Consul

It's been quiet since the Eid, especially as the 35th National Day celebrations have been taking place. A friend told me via Skype today that the street lights and decorations have been particularly notable this year. Nevertheless, a couple of items have caught my eye in recent days. First of all, the case of Lili Kumari Bishwokarma from Nepal, who had been imprisoned by the police in Salalah jail, presumably as a result of her employer reporting her as an absconder.

Starting over with newsbriefsoman

Virtually a year to the day since I was last able to update newsbriefsoman, I'm back online with a totally new look and revised ethos. Technology has moved on and I no longer have the time to dedicate to maintaining the website as it was. This blog format will enable me to update links much more easily.

I have continued to monitor the news from Oman daily, so there hasn't been a hiatus in coverage in that respect.

I have decided not to restore the existing archive of news from February 2001 to November 2004, because I don't think that the effort would be compensated by the benefit, although I have managed to publish the listings of ministers, officials and business people and projects

I have also started a listing of Royal Decrees published from November 2005 onwards.

If you would like a detailed briefing on Oman news going back to 2001, please contact me.

Welcome to Newsbriefsoman

Businessmen, travellers and tourists from America, Europe, Asia and Australasia, wanting to visit the Sultanate of Oman, may wish to find out more about the business, financial and social background of this country in the Persian Gulf, which borders Dubai and the other United Arab Emirates (UAE).

This website, in its previous incarnation, used to host an archive of Oman news summaries compiled from February 2001 to support such research by presenting business, political and development news about the Sultanate. With the availability of new software solutions, I have changed the ethos of the website so that I comment on issues which I select from articles published primarily in the Omani English-language press: the Oman Observer and the Times of Oman, and also the regional press, notably Gulf News and Khaleej Times, whilst maintaining listings of headlines, Royal Decrees, and Omani public figures.

I have also transferred most of the feature articles which used to appear on the old website. Please use the search facility to trace the item in which you might be interested.

Much business and economic information, which appears in the in-country newspapers, is not otherwise easily accessible. Both the Times of Oman and the Oman Observer now have searchable daily archives but they are limited in scope.

Sadly, since I upgraded the software to give readable urls, links from individual items to the main menu give error messages. In which case, click on NewsBriefsOman in the main menu, which will return you to the main page, and you will be able to reach other areas of the website from there.

Should you require more detail, or you would like more recent information, or if you can't find what you're looking for, please contact me to enquire about tariffs and to request a deeper, broader search of resources.
